Autistic Outreach
back to the About the School page
The service began in June 2002. The role of the service is to support schools with children on the autistic spectrum.
This support involves:
Training
Advice
Constancy
Resources
Target setting
Establishing Social Skills groups
Inter-agency linking
The training that can be provided to schools includes:
Whole school ‘ASD awareness raising’
Whole school practical strategies for inclusion
4 days training workshops held at Northcott
Whole school Social Stories training
Currently there are two members of the team – Colleen O’Connell who does one day a week outreach work and Jenny Clark who does 3 and a half days outreach. The service currently supports approximately 50 schools across Hull and around 80 children.
The service works through a referral system. Educational Psychologists discuss the possibility of referral with the school and in turn this is discussed with the parents. A referral form is completed and then Colleen or Jenny carries out an observation. It is after this initial observation that the outreach team agree the support the school requires.
A recent evaluation of the service was carried out and here are some of the results:
• 100% of respondents thought that the service should continue
• 100% rated the service as good / very good
• Many schools stated that input from the service was an essential component in successful inclusion for ASD pupils.
